History Coming Alive
Jail House Renovation Underway
Excitement is building as efforts begin to restore the historic jailhouse facility on Main Street in Rector as a community development office and visitor center. City employees Matt Vaughn and Jerry Mansfield erect a sign in front of the circa 1915 structure which housed the city jail and water office in the early days. The building was donated to the city by the Hamilton-Crockett-Jernigan families. Mayor Ron Kemp was notified this past week that the city has been approved for a grant of $25,000 from the Arkansas Dept. of Rural Services for use in renovating the building. The first phase of the work will begin immediately with ultimate plans for the building to become a real landmark for the city in terms of beauty and historical interest, as well as providing the headquarters for renewed efforts to secure new jobs and businesses.
